Types of Financial Aid

The College of Saint Thomas More offers three types of financial aid .

Grants
Federal Pell Grant

Federal Pell Grants are only awarded to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's or professional degree. Federal Pell Grants, which do not have to be repaid, are awarded to students based on need. The need is determined by the information provided on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

How much money you will receive under the Federal Pell Grant program is based on your need, the cost of attendance at your school, whether you are a part-time or full-time student, and whether you attend school for a full academic year or less.

Tuition Equalization Grant-Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership (TEG-LEAP)

Texas residents and National Merit Scholarship finalists enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students at independent colleges and universities in Texas. Student must show financial need according to the FAFSA, and be a bona fide Texas Resident enrolled at least half time. Full time students will be given priority. Maximum awards are $3572 TEG and $1250 LEAP.

Grants are awarded in the late summer, but late applicants may receive first-come, first-served status for unencumbered funds in December. Students beginning study in the Spring Semester may apply for unencumbered funds. There is no repayment required for these grants.

Supplemental Leveraging Educational Assistance Program (SLEAP)
Eligibility requirements are the same as those in the LEAP program. There is no repayment required for this grant.

Texas Grant (Toward Excellence, Access and Success Grant)

Available to Texas residents with financial need who completed the Recommended or Distinguished Achievement High School Program and graduated from high school after December 1998, and who enroll in a Texas college or university as a freshman within 15 months of high school graduation or a Texas resident who earned an Associate's Degree in May 2001 or later and who enroll in a Texas college or university to pursue a higher degree or certificate within 12 months of receiving the Associate's Degree.

Loans

Federal Stafford Loans
Federal student loans are either subsidized or unsubsidized. The government pays the interest on subsidized loans during the period you are in school. You are obligated to pay the interest on an unsubsidized loan -- even the amount that accrues while you are in school.

The Federal Stafford subsidized loan is awarded on the basis of financial need, which is determined by the information you provide on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If you qualify for a subsidized loan, the federal government pays interest on the loan (subsidizes the loan) until you begin repayment and during authorized periods of deferment thereafter.

Hinson Hazlewood College Student Loan Program --College Access Loan (CAL)
CAL loans are available to students eligible to pay Texas resident tuition rates enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate at public or independent colleges or universities in Texas. Students may borrow up to $7,500 per year (interest rate is currently 9%; rates are subject to change. These loans must be co-signed.

Work-Study

Federal Work-Study
Some work-study is available for those who wish to defray part of their tuition and gain work experience while they attend college. Work-study participants work with staff members, performing a variety of jobs enriching the students collegiate experience while enhancing the life of the College. Jobs and hours are flexible. Work-study hours are part of the tuition package agreed to between the College and each student at the beginning of each term. You must work the number of hours assigned for your student account to be credited and you may not acquire hours over and above the hours assigned at registration without prior authorization.

The Texas Work-Study Program

The Texas Work Study Program is similar to the Federal Work-Study Program but is available only to Texas Residents.

Refunds

Students may drop a class before the beginning of the semester for a full refund. Students who drop a class during the first week of the semester will receive a 90% refund. Students who drop a class during the second week of the semester will receive a 75% refund. No refunds will be given after the end of the second week of the semester.

Applying for Financial Aid

FAFSA

All students requesting financial aid must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

All requests for financial aid must be accompanied by a Student Aid Report from the federal government.  You obtain this by submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

These forms are available at the College, through your high school counselor, or at your local public library. Although applications are accepted throughout the year, we recommend that FAFSA forms be submitted by June 30 for the Fall semester.

Click to go to the Department of Education's FAFSA Website.
