Everything You Need:

Overview

The College attracts many different kinds of students and there is no single standard by which the Admissions Committee decides whether to admit a student. The most important factor, however, is the essays written for the application. In evaluating these, the College looks mainly for evidence of academic potential and a desire to learn and places less importance than most schools on grades and high standardized test scores. This is because, in our experience, the good student is not necessarily one who has learned the techniques of success in the school system, but one who possesses qualities that are often not measurable by grades—qualities such as thoughtfulness, docility, and love of truth.

Qualifications for Admissions

Admission to the College is open to students who possess the following qualifications:

  1. An understanding of the aim of studies in the liberal arts and a desire to participate in the curriculum expressed in the essay written as part of the application process
  2. Reading and writing ability sufficient to enable the student to pursue the curriculum fruitfully. For first time students, these abilities will be demonstrated by the essay written for the application.
  3. A high school diploma or GED is required of first-time college students.
  4. College transfer students must have a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5.
  5. SAT I or ACT scores.

Application Procedure

  1. Students should complete the College application.
  2. Payment of a $35 non-refundable application fee should be made to the College.
  3. High school graduates must have an official high school transcript sent.
  4. Students who have taken the GED in lieu of completing high school must have their scores mailed directly to the College.
  5. Two letters of recommendation, one from an official of the high school or college most recently attended, should be mailed to the College.
  6. Transfer students must have each college they have attended send official transcripts directly to the College.
  7. SAT I or ACT scores should be sent by the testing service to the College, unless already included on the high school transcripts.

Placement in Classical Languages

Entering students who have previously studied a classical language may receive placement beyond the initial course by demonstrating proficiency on the Latin or Greek entrance examination and/or by providing transcripts showing previous classical language course studies.  Students who offer for consideration courses in which their grade was lower than B will be asked to take the placement examination.

Matriculated and Occasional Students

Students seeking a degree are designated matriculated students by the College and are required to meet with the Dean of Students to develop a degree plan after initial acceptance.

An occasional student is one who wishes to study in the College but is not working toward a degree.  Occasional student status will normally be granted to persons who qualify under one of the following categories:

  • Those holding a degree from another college or university and not wishing to take a degree in the College.
  • Those who wish to take one or more courses but do not wish to be accepted and enrolled as a degree-seeking student.
  • Appropriately qualified high school students who may be admitted to studies as special students.

Transferring Credit to the College

The College of Saint Thomas More may accept up to 60 hours of course work completed at other institutions.  When transferring, students should meet with the Dean of Students to complete a degree plan and to determine which courses are eligible for transfer credit.  Those students who desire to have courses transferred should be prepared to present a transcript of that course.  Because the texts and ideas that make up the curriculum constitute a common core of intellectual experience, course work from other institutions may not satisfy College requirements.

Concurrent Registration

High school juniors and seniors, with approval from their school counselors, are allowed to take one class per semester for college credit.  Students interested should phone the Registrar at 817-923-8459.
