Courses in the Mathematics: MATH 1381 … Mathematics I. Mathematics studied as a liberal art through close reading and discussion of Euclidís Elements of Geometry, books I-V. Directed not only toward developing the studentís mathematical competence through demonstration of propositions at the blackboard, this course will also emphasize reflection upon the meaning and nature of mathematics. MATH 1382 … Mathematics II. A continuation of Mathematics I, this course will (1) complete the study of Euclidís Elements with Books VI-VIII and XI-XIII, (2) compare Euclidís treatment of number theory with the entirely different treatment of Nichomachus in the Introduction to Arithmetic, and (3) investigate Apolloniusís theory of an important new class of geometrical entities in his treatise On Conic Sections. Class procedure will be like that of Mathematics I, supplemented by discussion of selections from Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, and Pascal.
